Robert Brynjolfson

Rob Brynjolfson left his home in Vancouver, BC, Canada at the age of 18 to serve his first term as a missionary with International Teams in Bolivia, where he was involved in church planting. Upon his return, Rob studied at Northwest Baptist College in Vancou-ver, and then at Regent College where he earned an M.Div. At Regent he met and later married Silvia from Argentina. Together they served with WEC International in Spain and Equatorial Guinea, focusing on leadership training and development. Upon their return to Canada, Rob and Silvia were asked by WEC to start a “hands-on” missionary training program. This led to the founding of the Gateway Missionary Training Centre in Langley, BC, where he continues to serve as program director. In 2006, Rob complet-ed studies and was awarded a D.Min. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deer-field, Illinois. In July 2006, he stepped down as the pastor of Esperanza Multicultural Church in Burnaby, BC, to provide direction to the International Missionary Training Network (IMTN). Rob and Silvia have three children, Karis, Walter, and David. They live in Langley, BC, Canada.

& Jonathan Lewis
Jonathan Lewis

Jonathan Lewis was born in Argentina as one of eight children, and is a third generation missionary. He and his wife Dawn served as missionaries from 1976-1997 in Honduras, Peru, Mexico and Argentina. The development of ministry training resources and programs has been the predominant thread in the Lewis’ ministry. With a vision to support and train those involved in the emerging missions movement in Latin America, they developed the World Mission course in Spanish, first published in Argentina in 1986. Jon and Dawn spent much of the following years in Argentina with their four children, promoting missionary training, serving the COMIBAM missions movement, and helping establish the Center for Cross-Cultural Missionary Training (CCMT) in Cordoba. Jon also pursued studies in Human Resource Development and was awarded a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 1992. From 1992-2006, Jon served as a staff member of the World Evangelical Alliance Missions Commission. For five of those years, the Lewises lived in Canada and helped develop the Gateway Missionary Training Centre, while Jon also initiated the ACTS Intercultural Ministry Centre at Trinity Western University and taught in their cross-cultural ministries program. He continues with his commitment to missionary training, working with International Missionary Training Network. Jon and Dawn live in Ferndale, Washington, USA, and enjoy the outdoors.

Whole Person Training

Missionary attrition is a painful topic, but it does not need to remain a painful reality. In many cases, it is directly related to the lack of effective, pre-field training. Integral Ministry Training addresses the training needs of the entire person, focusing on who the person is (body, soul, and spirit), what they must be able to do, and their individual needs for effective personal and skill development. This approach benefits the life of the vocational Christian worker and increases their success. The churches and agencies who support them and the communities that they serve benefit as well.

Integral Ministry Training summarizes many years of practice and evaluation, incubation, and reflection on the how to train/equip/shape women and men for ministry, whether within cultures or cross-culturally. This manual is an invaluable resource for anyone from the global evangelical community who is involved with training people for ministry. As a textbook, it presents a biblical and educational framework for holistic training as well as a context-sensitive process for the design of new programs and the evaluation of existing programs. Packed with practical examples and aids, it is a tool that trainers will keep handy and use often in their course planning and implementation.

Building on previous publications in the Globalization of Mission Series, Integral Ministry Training calls for shaping men and women in their essential spirituality, their relationality, and the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will allow them not only to survive, but to thrive even in adverse circumstances.
